Kurt Mühlenhaupt was born 1921 in Klein-Ziescht, near Berlin. War-wounded, he studied one year at the private Academy of Art of the West in Berlin and from 1946 until 1948 attended the School of Fine Arts of Berlin. After the war he earned his living working as organ grinder and scrap metal dealer. In 1961 he opened in Berlin-Kreuzberg the “Leierkasten”, a café which became a meeting point for artists. One year later, in 1962 he had his first one-man exhibition at the “Berliner Kunstkabinett”. During the following thirty years, Kurt Mühlenhaupt showed his work in numerous exhibitions in Germany and other European countries, as well as in other continents. Some of them are of special importance to him, such as an itinerant exhibition presented between 1973 and 1978 in the biggest cities of Germany and Europe, called “Berliner Malerpoeten” (The painter-poets of Berlin) and his two major retrospectives in Berlin: 1981 at the Kunsthalle and 1991 at the National Galerie. In 1996 he celebrated his 75 th anniversary with an exhibition in the church "Zum Heiligen Kreuz" in Berlin-Kreuzberg. In the same year he left Berlin to live in Bergsdorf in the Mark Brandenburg where he opened his own museum. Apart from showing his own works, exhibitions by other well known German artists are organized. Kurt Mühlenhaupt lives and works in Bergsdorf and in Montes de Cima, Algarve. Several exhibitions were organized in 2001 to celebrate the 80 th anniversary of the Berlin artist, among others, at the Museum Bergsdorf, Stadtmuseum of Düsseldorf and the third big retrospective in Berlin at the Nicolai church. A monograph with the title ”Maler der Liebe” (Painter of Love) was edited on occasion of this exhibition. |
