Nuno Santiago’s artistic trajectory has developed steadily and consistently since his first exhibition in the Algarve in 1996. We know his mysterious, serene paintings where large colour superficies – red, yellow, green or white – arise, enigmatically, from a black background. We know his technique based on the application of wrinkled rice paper on canvas, a technique that gives his works a sculptural dimension.
Today Nuno surprises us with new works, new as to the technique and as to the colours. Instead of rice paper, the artist uses painted stripes of canvas and acrylic gesso applied onto the background canvas according to a complex system of collage. The vibrant colours now seem to follow a different rhythm. They are more contrasted, sometimes violent. Still majestic and serene these works make us discover a world of light and contrasted colours.
